The Choices We Make

“So God created man in his own image,
In the image of God he created him;
Male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27
We were created by God. We are made after His image. We are His workmanship. Pretty simple and easy to understand correct? Some living today don’t get this. They don’t understand this concept. It’s not been taught in their homes or in their environment. They just don’t know.
It is our duty as Christians to spread the good news about Christ. The cross is where it’s all about, but for some we need to start not at the cross but at the beginning. It’s like jumping in in the middle of a book. We need to start with the concept that we all were created by God; each one of us. There was no other Creator. We all were created by Him. We are all the same. Our skin may make us different but we all have a mind, a heart and a soul. We all have the capacity to love and to hate. Some choose to love others and put hate aside while others choose to hate and put love aside.
There is something in all of us that sees something that God created and it takes our breath away. For some a newborn babe, others a sunrise or a sunset, maybe an ocean or a majestic mountain or even the beauty of a canyon. But at one time something we see catches our eyes and we are amazed and whether we admit it or not we know God exists.
When we come in contact with people we should see them with those same set of eyes. If we could see each other not as we are but as God’s creation how different life would be. If we could look at each other and marvel at God’s handiwork in each other our skin color, where we came from and how we worship wouldn’t matter. Love would abound.
Satan was created by God. At one time Satan had been a glorious angel. But pride became overpowering and he chose to rebel against God. God kicked him out of Heaven. If you notice it said he chose to rebel. It was a choice he made. We all have choices to make everyday. We get to chose who we want to be. It’s not forced on us. No one forced the angel to make the decision to rebel. He chose it for himself.
We as humans, everyone of us, has the right to make our own choices. We can choose to love one another and see Christ in each other or we can choose to let pride and other sinful thoughts enter our mind and destroy us or help us destroy those around us. We chose to love or we choose to hate. I know some will say but if you’re taught to hate you will hate and that may be true, but I believe God gives everyone the opportunity sometime in their lifetime to make a decision to change. We have the choice to change; to be different.
Maybe when Satan entered the serpent and offered the apple to Eve and when God confronted them just maybe Satan was given the opportunity to repent; maybe not. He chose to continue down this path and bring evil in this world. We can choose to continue down a certain path or we can come to a crossroad in our lives and choose a different direction.
We can choose to love others or we can choose pride and allow hateful thoughts to enter our mind and destroy us and those we encounter.
We are free to make choices. No one makes the choices we make for us unless you are a child. My daughter often says this, “ it may be your parents fault for the way you were raised, but it’s your fault if you choose to stay that way.” As adults there is no one who has the ability to demand that we live one way or another. If they do that is a dangerous relationship and we need to choose to step out of that relationship and think for ourselves.
There are some who are conformed to this world and believe all that is taught to them. We are told in the Bible to be transformed and not conform to this world. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2
Conform means to comply with, abide by, obey, observe, follow, keep to, stick to, adhere to, uphold, heed, accept, go along with, fall in with, respect, defer. This is not what God wants from us. He wants us to learn to know that which is good and pleasing not allowing others to dictate to us.
Some dreadful things have happened in this last month we can choose to allow hate to continue and move us down that path or we can choose to see each other as Christ and to reach out in love. We can choose to change this world and our environment or we can choose to follow the crowd. It’s our choice.
“But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15
What will be your choice?
Dear God This day I asked to be transformed and not conform to this world. I make the choice to love and set hatred for my fellowman aside. This day I choose to follow you and to serve others.  I choose to be different and not follow the ways of the world. I choose not to go along with the crowd, instead I choose to listen to you and follow your ways. Help me help others to see you in everyone we meet. Help me to show others it’s not about skin color, religion, or any thing else; it’s all about seeing you in others and seeing God’s creation in each person. May I be an example for people to follow by loving others unconditionally and without regard to skin color or religion.
